Val d'Aveto is one of the most interesting areas in the Ligurian hinterland from a
naturalistic point of view. Its wide open spaces are rich in beech and fir woods and
the upper valley has much in common with typical North European regions, despite being
so close to the sea. Hidden away among the trees you come to small lakes dating back to
the Ice Age, which is something quite exceptional at this latitude and there are flowers
of rare beauty and scientific interest. The most important of these lakes are those
within the park known as Riserva Naturale Orientata delle Agoraie. (See "Free Time"
if you're interested in a visit). The highest peaks of the Ligurian Apennines can be
seen in this Nature Park: Maggiorasca (1804m.) and Penna (1741m.)
